Sports and remedial massage
Sports & remedial massage is a deeper form of massage using very specific techniques to treat soft tissue (muscle tissue, tendons and ligaments).
The massage also helps alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s muscles during physical exercise or from prolonged inactivity, such as sitting at a desk all day or long distance driving.
This treatment is not just for the athlete or amateur sportsman but will benefit anyone with muscle problems related to any activity such as gardening, or any kind of strenuous work, it is also a very effective form of stress control and relaxation.
Soft tissues are made up of tiny individual muscle fibres or cells. If these fibres are put under stress, such as overloading, emotional, occupational and postural, they are at risk of becoming injured. These stresses can often occur at a microscopic level and often take some time to develop before any actual pain is felt.
When these fibres do become injured they are repaired by scar tissue. This can cause adhesions or “stickiness” between the muscle fibres (referred to by many and felt like “knots” or lumps in the muscles). These adhesions can impair the correct functioning and efficiency of the muscle which can then cause pain and discomfort due to the muscle imbalances.
Sports and remedial massage plays an important role in re-aligning injured muscle fibres and can help to break down adhesion by enhancing circulation to the area.
Some of the everyday problems and common injuries that can be effectively treated with Sports & Remedial Massage are
- chronic muscular aches and pains
